🛠️ How to translate FrameMaker files

This guide walks you through translating FrameMaker content using the XLIFF 1.2 workflow. You'll export your FrameMaker document as an XLIFF file, translate it using Redokun, and then reimport the translated XLIFF back into FrameMaker.

📄 1. Export an XLIFF file from FrameMaker

To begin, export your FrameMaker document as an XLIFF 1.2 file:

  1. Open your FrameMaker document.
  2. Navigate to File > Translation > Export to XLIFF 1.2.

In the XLIFF Export Settings dialog:

    • Package Filename: Specify the name and location for the exported ZIP package.
    • Source Language: Select the source language of your document.
    • Embed Skeleton to XLIFF: It's recommended to enable this to ensure the original structure is preserved.
    • Adjust additional settings as needed (e.g., expose hidden conditional text, process soft returns).
  3. Click Export to generate the XLIFF package.

❗ FrameMaker does not prompt for target languages during export. You'll specify target languages later in Redokun.

🌍 2. Upload, translate, and download in Redokun

Redokun makes it easy to speed up and collaborate on translations:

Once you have your XLIFF file:

  1. Upload the file to your Document List.
  2. Choose your source language and add one or more target languages.
  3. Assign translators, translate online or offline, then confirm all segments.
  4. Download the translated XLIFF file when finished.

📦 3. Import the translated XLIFF into FrameMaker

To finalize the translation in FrameMaker:

  1. Open your original FrameMaker document.
  2. Navigate to File > Translation > Import XLIFF.

In the XLIFF Import Settings dialog:

    • Package Filename: Select the translated XLIFF package you downloaded from Redokun.
    • Output Directory: Choose an empty folder where the imported files will be extracted.
  3. Click Import to merge the translations into your FrameMaker document.

🎉 Your FrameMaker file is now fully translated, with formatting and structure preserved.
