Configuring InDesign before exporting the IDML

Want to skip this configuration?

🗣️ Install our InDesign extension and skip this configuration: The InDesign extension.

Why is this necessary?

Redokun relies on InDesign to generate the previews when saving the file. It is the quickest and most reliable way of producing the page thumbnails.

Using this method, you won't need to upload the document assets (images, fonts, etc) separately to generate the page previews. Instead, InDesign does that automatically when properly configured.

Set up InDesign manually

⚠️ If you do not plan on using the Web Editor, then skip this guide.

The best way to set up InDesign is by installing Redokun's InDesign extension. Follow these steps if you are having issues with installing the extension:

  1. Open Adobe InDesign.
  2. Go to InDesign > Preferences > File Handling (MacOS), OR Go to Edit > Preferences > File Handling (Windows).
  3. In the Preferences dialog:
    • Check Always Save Preview Images with Documents.
    • Set Pages to All Pages.
    • Set Preview Size to Extra Large 1024x1024
  4. After configuring InDesign, restart the program.

This preference setting will affect  all InDesign documents that you'll save in the future. There is no way to have page previews for old documents that haven’t been saved in the INDD format with these new preference settings.

⚠️ After configuring InDesign, you need to save your document in INDD format and then export the file in IDML format.
