π Tags and Markers
This guide explains the difference between tags and markers, how to handle them correctly, and how to ensure your formatting is preserved in the translated file.
π What Are Tags?
Tags are used to preserve formatting such as bold, italic, underlines, colors, and hyperlinks in your translated documents.
When Redokun detects formatting in a source document, it automatically inserts numbered tags (like 1
, 2
, etc.) to mark the beginning and end of those styled portions.
Youβll see these tags inside the Web Editor and should keep them in the same position when translating.
π§ Tag Example: Formatting Carried into Translation
In the example below, there are four tags present in the document. This means some sort of formatting has been detected in the source document:
- Tag 1 and Tag 2 indicate that in the source document, the words 'all the sentences' are bolded and red.
- Tag 3 and Tag 4 indicate that the word 'Excel' is underlined.
To preserve the formatting in the translated document, these four tags should appear in the corresponding translation.
π― Best Practices for Tags
- Do not delete tags unless you're sure they are unnecessary.
- If a tag is misplaced, you can move it:
- Delete the misplaced tag.
- Put your cursor where it should go.
- Press the
Tab
key to insert it back.
Repeat the process for each tag that needs to be reinserted.
π΅οΈ Markers: Optional Helpers for Special Characters
Markers are used to ease the handling of special characters (like soft-returns or special spaces) in a translation segment. They help indicate these characters in the source, but unlike tags, their presence is not enforced in the translated segment.
Redokun does not require you to add or match markers β you only need to retain the ones already present in the original segment, if relevant.
In many cases, you can reduce or eliminate markers by enabling the options to:
- [Convert Soft-returns] β standardizes soft line breaks.
- [Convert special spaces] β replaces non-breaking or special spaces with classic ones.
Doing so helps βcleanβ the extracted text and improves the chances that your approved translations can be reused in future documents.
